About Us

As have the early 1950s & 60s, residents from the New Territories region of Hong Kong have immigrated to the United Kingdom. A large majority of these people began their lives in the laundry & catering businesses. Through a lot of hard work over the years, many of them managed to achieve roles in highly respected professions and positions. Subsequently, the vast majority of these people managed to easily integrate into English Society, making new homes and settling with their families in several regions of the UK.

The vast majority of these people (approximately 80%) came originally from the Mei-Zhou Territory of the Eastern Guangdong Province in the Southern China.

Mei-Zhou is a cultural province where the Chinese dialect, Hakka, is spoken predominantly. Hakka people are a unique ethnic group of the Han Chinese, who originally came from an area around the Yellow River, and who later migrated to the South, in order to avoid the chaos created by wars centuries ago. Due to the hostilities faced by these new settlers, many were forced into the mountainous regions of Guangdong. The migratory tradition continued, with the redistribution of Hakka people to the most remote parts of the world, and many people in Mei-Zhou immigrating to Hong Kong during the last century.

In September 2007, this Non-profitable Association have been formed by a group of local successful business people, including President Mr. Michael Chan, Ms. Dorian Chan, Mr. Kim Bong Lam, Mr. Frankie Tsang & Mr. Ken Tong as well as many other community volunteers & leaders of Chinese Society in Birmingham, such as Ms. Irene Chu, Mr. Bobby Wong Ms Patricia Law & Mr. Terence Kwong.

Our aim is to work together with all Mei Zhou immigrants old & new in the UK, as well as to bring together friends & relatives across the country to learn more about our roots & origin. We also aim to create a helpline to provide people who have newly immigrated with all the necessary and correct information, in addition to encouraging them to join us in participating local community activities, charity work and fundraising. Last, but not least, the Mei Zhou Association also feels that it is important to honour our elderly with gifts during our Lunar Calendar Main Festival, as well as to pay respect to them in return for all that they have contributed to our family & society as a whole.

In order to do all this, we need the help and support of people, like yourself to assist us. What we hope you will agree, is a scheme that will greatly benefit towards our local community.

On behalf of the association, and its members, our president looks forward to any support that you may be able to offer us. I further look forward to hearing from you with any views or suggestions that you may have to offer.
